Instagram-Worthy Indianapolis Murals
Last weekend was the Indy Mural Fest in Indianapolis, an initiative to beautify the walls of the city by having local artists paint murals around town and emphasize the importance of local and public art. This event inspired me to round up my top three favorite murals that are sure to leave you in awe and also snap a great Instagram picture. These murals can be found all over the city and there are so many more that I’m missing but they are definitely on my list (and in a future Instagram post). Leave the location of your favorite mural in the comments!
#1: The Rabbit Mural - Acceleration Art Studio, 1336 Shelby St.
This mural is one of my favorites in the city! The black and white colors lend itself to pairing well with any outfit if you’re looking to make an Instagram post. The art is by Joshua Sterrett aka Sideview Studio and other rabbits can be seen on the side of the neighboring Fountain Square Brewery as well as inside. Definitely take time after shooting content to pop inside and try a beer, my favorites from here are Workingman’s Pilsner and the seasonal Cinnamon Girl.
#2: The Butterfly/Moth Mural - CityWay CVS, 172 E. South St.
This mural is part of the artistic push that the CityWay complex is bringing to the city. The shadowbox butterflies (or moths?) are the perfect neutral color for photos and their shadows bring another element to a photo while also making you pop! They were painted by the artist Mantra who specializes in these shadowbox butterflies and works all over the world. Be sure to walk around CityWay after you’re done snapping pictures to see all of the other pieces of art that grace their buildings.
#3: The “Indianapolis” Mural - In the alley between 16+Bit and The Tap
This mural is a new and welcome addition to the Circle City and it truly tells it like it is - large letters span the walls spelling “Indianapolis”. Since this mural is relatively new (I believe it was part of the build of 16+Bit) I’m having a hard time figuring out the artist that should be credited but next time I’m in the area I’ll swing by and see if the wall is tagged. For more reference, it is located between The Whit and Pulliam Square apartments, or 16+Bit and The Tap. The only downside to this mural is the big green utility boxes that will definitely be in your shot, but now’s your chance to get creative!
Those are just three of the hundreds of public art pieces in the city that you could take a great picture with. This blog post was definitely inspired by the Indy Mural Fest and I’ll leave a map and a link to see where new art has popped up after that weekend. I also find a lot of inspiration from Tyler of the @indy.streetart Instagram account and I’ll link it here, too so you never miss out on new art in the city. And lastly, the Arts Council of Indianapolis has a whole index of art in the city in the Indy Arts Guide so you can browse that and let the ideas flow. Tag me in your mural photos, I can ‘t wait to see what gems you find!
