Getaway with Shay: Savannah

We recently got to take a trip to Savannah, Georgia and we absolutely fell in love. The city vibe of Savannah was strong but the slow-paced Southern way of living was evident as well. I’ve put together this post to help you find things to eat, drink, and do when visiting Savannah and hopefully help you create some unique memories there!

Things to Eat

  • Leopold’s Ice Cream - A classic spot for ice cream in Savannah! Be sure to get here right at opening to miss the line. I got the Rum Bisque and Evan got the original Tutti Frutti.

  • Savannah Bee Company - Bringing you high quality honey and honey related accessories and decor!

  • River Street Sweets - A dream stop for any kid, or even adult. Be sure to try the free praline samples!

  • The Grove - A great rooftop view of the city, and I definitely recommend sipping on an Orange Fizz while you take in the views.

  • Fox and Fig - In a city full of BBQ and shrimp and grits, it was welcoming to see a great vegan spot! I got the Bowl of Plenty with chilled marinated tofu and it was delicious.

  • The Deck - Dine with the ocean in view at Tybee Island’s only beachfront restaurant, the shrimp quesadillas are a must-try.

Things to Drink

  • Origin Coffee Bar - Right near the Savannah College of Art and Design, or SCAD, and selling the most amazing croissant that is encrusted with everything bagel seasoning and filled with cream cheese.

  • Hop Atomica - A microbrewery and gastropub serving up tasty brews. You absolutely have to try Pinky Swear, it tastes just like a pink Starburst!

  • Electric Moon Rooftop Lounge - Enjoy live music with an incredible view! The drinks are tasty and unique and you can watch all the huge boats sail by on the river below.

  • Perc Coffee - Perc is such a Savannah hidden gem and they serve up delicious drinks in an atmosphere with immaculate vibes.

  • New Realm Distillery - Right in the heart of downtown Savannah. This place reminds me so much of Burnside Inn in Indy where you can sip on your drink and people watch from above.

  • El-Rocko Lounge - This place had a dive bar vibe with a 1970s aesthetic, and since Savannah has very lax drinking laws, you can take a traveler to go with you.

Things to Do

  • Walk around all of the park squares - the city of Savannah has 22 total square shaped parks platted into the streets, some like Chippewa Square being featured on Forrest Gump!

  • Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist - This gorgeous cathedral was built in 1873 and is in the French Gothic style. Be sure to visit when services are over to witness the gorgeous stained glass windows and painted vaulted ceilings inside.

  • River Street - This area of the city is always bustling and full of tourists and locals alike. If you’re looking for a souvenir sweatshirt, place to eat, a Christmas ornament, or local honey, River Street has it all there for you.

  • Forsyth Park - Check out the infamous fountain and stroll underneath the beautiful and grand live oak spanish moss trees.

  • Wormsloe State Historic Site - The expansive drive of spanish moss trees will leave you in absolute awe! Check out the ruins of what was once a colonial estate from 1733.

  • Bonaventure Cemetery - For over 150 years, this cemetery has been a major tourist attraction, from the oak lined paths to the buried nobles like Johnny Mercer and Conrad Aiken.

  • Tybee Island - Only a 30 minute drive from downtown Savannah, Tybee Island offers beautiful beaches and also boasts a stunning lighthouse.

  • Captain Derek’s Dolphin Tours - We were so impressed with this tour! We saw tons of dolphins and got to enjoy a couple of hours out on the water, a big win-win for sure!

  • Mercer House - Featured in the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, the Mercer House is open to tour and take in the history and mystery within the walls.

Things to Know

  • Tons of affordable parking garages around the town

  • Wear the most comfortable shoes possible - NO HEELS
